Teos Ancient City

Teos, located on the seaside one kilometer south of Sığacık Village, which is 5 kilometers away from Seferihisar District in İzmir, was established as an Ionian colony in 1000 BC. The son of its founder, Dioysos, is known as Athames. Teos first remained under Persian rule, then Lydians and then Persians again. With the Ions, Teos gained its independence and became an important place in the architectural field and trade. There are Hellenistic and Roman period ruins in Teos, which is the most important of the city. It is the largest Dionysos Temple of the ancient world, known as the most important ancient monument in Teos, which is open to visitors. Other important ruins are Agora, theater, odeon, city walls and harbor ruins. Excavations run by Musa Kadıoğlu who is instructor in Ankara University, Department of Archeology.
